Living in a Box

Living in a Box is the second independent choreography by Tran Ly Ly to premiere in Hanoi following her very successful Mot Ngay – One Day. Together with the German Herbert Cybulska, who is responsible for lighting, she is continuing the tradition of international cooperation in contemporary dance in Vietnam which began with her participation in the outstanding dance productions Under the Skin by Regine Chopinot/ La Rochelle und Venus in Hanoi by Felix Ruckert/ Berlin.

Starting point and leitmotiv of Tran Ly Ly’s new production Living in a Box is the human experience that we are connected by our senses with the images, colors, smells and sounds of the world around us and from them we construct our memories and feelings. But sometimes, when we are all alone, we also retreat into our own inner world, like into a box. Everyone possesses such a box, joined to the outer world with visible and invisible threads. Tran Ly Ly’s dancers carry these boxes around with them, grapple with them, search for ways to come to terms with them.

Tran Ly Ly’s choreography does not concern itself with great themes, it deals instead with individual experiences, fears and questions. And it is precisely because of this affinity with everyday experience that her work develops such a fascinating intensity.
