Hanoi Ink – Poetry Bordello

A very tentative and delayed offering from Hanoi Ink on the Poetry Bordello event organized by Hanoi Writers’ Collective and Synergy Music Productions at The Cooperative on An Duong Vuong on June 4.

So I’ve been wishin’ and hopin’ and prayin’ and waitin’ (well some of those things, and also wincin’ as I always do when someone drops the g) that someone more qualified in the Hanoi Grapevine stable of writers would throw down some lines about the Poetry Bordello event in June. But apparently, they got nothin’.

In my lameness, I didn’t even make it to the whole event. Or probably even half of it. But I was there at the end, surrounded by the longhairs and bearded ones, the bohemians with their red wine, soaking up the raucousness, the music, the outfits and the language.

The event was worthy of notice. Some very different moments from the usual Hanoi fare, although Phuong Dang’s music and the involvement of SMP provided both a connection and jumping off point from the active little live music and open mic scene that has been bubbling along for the past many months. And all in a good cause, raising money for victims of domestic violence.

I didn’t really catch enough of the night to do it justice for Hanoi Grapevine. Fortunately, though, one of the organizers, Andy Engelson, has written up an account of the night (you can see here) together with some YouTube footage of the event.

Hanoi Writers’ Collective seems to have been growing in strength lately. So take this as a kind of “watch this space”. And (talking mainly to myself here) don’t miss the next one!

Hanoi Ink has never quite managed to give up his day job but is nonetheless a very active member of the music scene in Hanoi. His other obsessions are Vietnamese literature and old books, which he writes about at http://hanoiink.wordpress.com/.
