Workshop: Wed 20 May 2015, 9 am – 5 pm
Goethe Institut

From Goethe Institut:

During his stay as artist in residence at the Goethe-Institut, Kleist is showing his individual drawing techniques to young professionals. Besides trying out different techniques he is explaining his style by reference to his own works in this workshop. Moreover, the workshop is dealing with the crucial question of how to create a gripping story.

Kleist’s works cannot be pigeonholed; often inspired by journeys abroad his works often show social criticism. His latest novel The dream of Olympia deals with the bitter fate of the Somalian sportswoman Samia Yusuf Omar, whose dream of Olympia tragically ends in death when she has to flee from Islamic extremists.

Kleist developed his individual style over the years. Whereas in his beginnings his drawings stylistically resembled the works of artists like Dave McKean, his latest works are said to be similar in style to those of the American pioneer of the graphic novel Will Eisner. Strong contrasts between light and dark as well as fluent lines are typical for Kleist’s illustrations.
