From the organizer:

Come to the silk painting exhibition “The Order”, the first solo exhibition by young artist Le Thuy.

Artist’s statement:

“I have a cynical feeling about life. What my eyes see is only the tip of the iceberg, and the beauty that I observe is seemingly not itself. Everything appears to follow a certain order which has been created to control and arrange rules aiming at establishing an organized and disciplined society.

I express these cynical feelings about order through the placement and composition of the animal I paint such as fish, birds, and dogs, etc. They live in the natural order, namely groups or species. Sometimes they live separately, which is not against the order but strengthens the relationship. Just like in human society, there have been individuals trying to protest and make a change. The action is an essential part of creating the order, which sometimes might suppress emotion, freedom, and the development of humans.

I place these animals in a large, empty and flat spatial composition to express my confusion among the individuals and the group. In addition, the color of gold and silver represents intangible value in the group, with the view to expressing tangible linkage among individuals.

These threads are like values people wish such as money and social status.

Besides, I also feel a sense of loss and uneasy about death and bondage. I decided to repress the composition, or set it aside to express my emotion. Sense of death is also expressed through my simple palette using soft colors and blurring of details bringing me endless obsessions.

I am passionate about silk as it is a traditional typical material of Eastern Area. Silk is smooth but weaved with extremely tight silk fibers, just like connections among individuals in a society. I exploit the transparent aspects of silk to create the feeling of longing, mystery, and obsession. Viewers can focus on the image on the surface of the silk, or also see through the silk to what is behind the silk, to create tension that reflects my own obsessions.”

Le Thuy had participated in group exhibition “The Echo of Nature” with other young artists in August 2014.
