The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic are a unique ensemble.

The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic

This year the renowned ‘orchestra within an orchestra’, already with its second generation of members, is celebrating its 38th birthday. Their musical triumphal march is taking them all around the world.

The parent orchestra has a rigorous selection tradition: new members are accepted only if approved by all 130 orchestra members. The 12 cellists, among the best in the world, play an extensive repertoire with the brilliance of their parent orchestra. The pieces, each 3 -7 minutes long, range from Bach, Mendelssohn, Shostakovich, and Villa Lobos to the Beatles and film music. The 12 cellists master the most demanding of challenges and pass with flying colors. They play on precious instruments, all of which stem from 17th and 18th century Italian workshops. Nearly one hundred contemporary composers have created works especially for them. Two concerts will be performed in Vietnam as part of Germany in Vietnam 2010.
