November 2010
Hanoi
As long as contemporary Vietnamese art has existed, the city of Hanoi has been a popular theme and has been dealt with in a variety of ways over the decades.
The exhibition The City in Art will address the various paths and trends which artists have taken in their attempts to portray the city of Hanoi. The range is broad, from explicit nostalgia – exotic, romantic, colonial – to merciless criticism of the consequenses of the rapid pace of development in the city.
The exhibition, curated by Natasha Kraevskaia and Lisa Drummond, shows the work of both Vietnamese and German artists who have a close connection with Hanoi and have grown closer to the city in their work. The photographer Andre Lützen will contribute a series dedicated to Hanoi. The exhibition will show work which has been created in the last 2 decades, as well as pieces made especially for The City in Art.
