From Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design:
An event for young creative practitioners, professionals, community and corporate members, and all who are interested in art, creative and innovation industries!
Join the talk with Dr. Jane Gavan from the Sydney Vietnam Institute on pioneering, innovative practices that bring about new opportunities in art and design, museums, communities, business, and the creative and cultural industries as a whole. With new Vietnam-based projects alongside international exemplars, this talk will also touch on strategies to overcome challenges and effectively implement innovative practices within organisations.
This interactive talk and networking event is designed to share experiences and practices related to “regeneration”, the theme of Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design this year, in developing cultural heritage, community engagement and positive, sustainable impacts on the environment.
Speaker: Associate professor Dr Jane Gavan
Jane Gavan is an artist and academic at the University of Sydney, in the School of Contemporary Art (SCA). Jane is one of the leaders of the Sydney Vietnam Centre, a research education and practice community-based in Vietnam and the University of Sydney.
Jane’s practice follows two interrelated paths – the first is studio research into innovative and sustainable use of materials and processes for artists, and the second explores the potential benefits and critical issues for artist exemplars within manufacturing communities.
Jane has worked with organisations to increase rates of innovation. She often connects industry to university research teams or government groups to solve problems or test ideas.
Moderator: Journalist Truong Uyen Ly
Journalist Truong Uyen Ly has conducted independent research on Vietnam’s creative hubs since 2014 until now. She was a reporter for arts and culture at Tuoi Tre newspaper from 2001 to 2009; a co-judge for the Denmark-Vietnam Cultural Development and Exchange Fund (2008-2013); and the director of the pioneering art and cultural hub Hanoi Grapevine (2017-2024).

She also completed the three-year specialised training course MediaNet – a skills enhancement project for young Vietnamese journalists organised by the British Council and the Vietnam News Agency, with the professional support from the Thomson Foundation, from 2005 to 2007. She won the highest prize at the National Press Awards.
