The operetta “Die Fledermaus” (German for ‘The Bat’) premiered in 1874 in Vienna (Austria) and has since then enjoyed worldwide popularity. During the season of 2017/2018 alone there will be performances in Australia, Great Britain, the US, Japan and France, as well as in Austria and Germany. “Die Fledermaus” will have its premiere in Ho Chi Minh City this summer, produced by the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO), supported by the Goethe Institute Vietnam.
The reasons for the operetta’s longterm popularity are the enchanting waltz melodies as well as the thrilling plot, evolving around a glamorous New Year’s Eve ball.
A few words about the content: Dr. Falke, intending to take vengeance on a friend, invites numerous guests to the aforementioned ball. All attendants are wearing masks and take over different identities for the night which leads to deliberate confusion under the influence of music and champagne: a maid turns into an artist, a prison warden turns into a marquis and a married man seduces his own wife. It is not before the next morning that order can be reinstated. All guests agree of course that the champagne is to be blamed.

The operetta highlights humorously what lies behind the façade of the bourgoise society, showing how it is pervaded by intrigues, deceit and betrayal. Much as Vienna during the 19th century, Ho Chi Minh City is a sprawling and vibrant place, therefore being almost predetermined to host this play full of feverish energy.
The operetta “The Fledermaus” is staged by the the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) in cooperation with the Goethe Institute Vietnam. It is directed by David Hermann (Deutsche Oper Berlin), choirmaster Tran Nhat Minh, with musical direction by Askan Geisler (Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen) and Tran Nhat Minh (second performance). The stage design is made by Thurid Peine, with costumes created by the Vietnamese fashion designer Quynh Paris. The same team has already successfully staged “Die Zauberflöte” (‘The Magic Flute’) in 2014. In 2016 it was restaged with Vietnamese singers exclusively, singing the German original texts. This was facilitated by the Goethe Institute through offering intensive language training and pronounciation support during rehearsals. It also invited the director and musical director from Germany for the rehearsal period.
The staging of “Die Fledermaus” is a sequel to this cooperation which started in 2014. During six weeks of intensive rehearsals, the HBSO orchestra, choir, ballet and soloists will work on this operetta together with David Hermann as director and Askan Geisler as conductor. Among the soloists are the stars of the HBSO such as Pham Trang (tenor) who has studied in Germany, Cho He Hae Ryong (soprano) and Cho He Hae Ryong (baritone) who won over the audience’s hearts with his performance as Papageno in “Die Zauberflöte”.
The operetta will be sung in German and spoken in Vietnamese.
