Music in Films: From Metropolis to Baby Driver

Sun 25 Feb 2018, 3 pm – 5 pm
Cultural Salon Ca phe Thu bay
No. 3 Ngo Quyen, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi

From the organizer:

As part of the fund-raising event series “Empathy in the Arts”, the event “Music in Films: From Metropolis to Baby Driver” will help you gain better understanding of 6 notable films through their musical and time elements: from the silent scenes in Metropolis (1927) to the classic Italian arias in The Shawshank Redemption (1994) and the sounds in the recent blockbuster Baby Driver (2017). We will explore how these two types of art (music and cinema) evoke empathy in humans with two guest speakers: Ms. Trang Trinh (pianist, music educator) and Mr. Marcus Manh Cuong Vu (film curator).

About the speakers:

Trang Trinh is a classically trained pianist once praised by Forbes Vietnam as one of the outstanding individuals “under 30” in Vietnam. Apart from achieving numerous international prizes, she has become a phenomenon with her creative performing methods shown through various projects and concerts that attracted a lot more audience to classical music in Vietnam. In 2013, together with her husband – opera tenor Park Sung Min – she founded the Miracle Choir & Orchestra, teaching music for free to more than 50 less fortunate children in Hanoi on a weekly basis.

Marcus Manh Cuong Vu is the founder, former president and head of the curatorial board of YXineFF, an online film festival for young people. He has been a curator and a judge for many film local and international festivals and competitions.

*** NOTE: Participants are encouraged to watch the following films prior to the event in order to make the most out of their discussion with the guest speakers:

– Metropolis (Fritz Lang)
– The Shawshank Redemption (Frank Darabont)
– Talk to Her (Pedro Almodovar)
– The Lives of Others (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck)
– Elephant (Gus van Sant)
