‘Youth in cities- A Disinterested Generation?’

Thurs 30 Oct 2008, 7pm
S10 Studio, Vietnam Television, 844 De La Thanh
invitations can be collected from the British Council from 27 October.

Books, films and press in Vietnam and the UK these days often talk about the young urban generation as a disinterested generation. Is it true? What do young people think about this? Some would say yes, and some would say no.

The 21st century is the century of the city – nowhere more so than in East Asia where hundreds of millions of people now live in high density urban communities. And cities are the places that the young people come to study, to work and to live. Vietnam is no an exception, especially as it is a country with a young population. Statistics show that more than 60% of the population is under 25 and cities in Vietnam are expanding day by day.

So who are they, the urban youth? Are they the generation which views the world as purposeless? Are they the generation which knows everything but cares about nothing? And what sort of life do they lead? Do they have their own living space? Do they ever really think about what they can do for the community they live in?

By taking a close look into the cultural life of young people in cities today, the British Council’s CityTalk in October entitled ‘Youth in Cities – A Disinterested Generation?’ may be able to provoke some thought about these controversial questions. The talk will be led by TV presenter My Linh with the participation of visual artists Nguyen Manh Hung, film director Do Thanh Hai, and British artist Joe Magee.

The debate will be in Vietnamese & English with simultaneous translation.

This October CityTalk is organised by the British Council Vietnam in collaboration with the Vietnam Television.

British Council’s CityTalk Series

In 2008, the British Council regularly hosts a series of discussion on city themes called CityTalk in Hanoi. This is a part of ‘Creative Cities’ – a three year cultural and artistic partnership between East Asia and the UK which aims to develop the concept of creative cities as those cities which openly represent and celebrate the diversity of its inhabitants and are committed to improving the quality of life and learning.

With the Citytalk series, the British Council hopes to provide a space for urban citizens to creatively think and talk about the place where they live, and how to make it ‘loveable’ and ‘liveable’.
