Women’s Museum – Street Vendors Exhibition
A fascinating exhibition about the lives of those women who are ubiquitous on Hanoi’s streets and lend much to the charm of the city.
Open until 31 May, 2009
every day of the week, 8.30am-4.30pm
This exhibition provides revealing insights into the daily lives of Hanoi’s women street vendors. Many of these women travel to Hanoi each week from surrounding rural areas. Over a nine month period in 2008 staff from the Vietnamese Women’s Museum recorded the lives of a group of 33 street vendors. They followed their steps through the narrow streets of Hanoi, went with them to their small rented rooms in the alleys and returned with them to their families in the villages.
Recent laws have banned street vendors from 62 of Hanoi’s main streets and historic and cultural beauty spots. The exhibition shows how this has affected street vendors and their customers through photographs, objects and filmed interviews.
A Street Vendors Exhibition Catalogue is also available for purchase.
