Nguyễn Đức Tú – video and large-scale panoramic photos
In contrast to many contemporary photographers, Tu is not interested in objective, documentary photography. He instead focuses on the creative process, on the act of taking pictures, on the philosophy of concept and on the camera as the essential artistic tool.
“The final reality appearing in these photographs is not the causal one. What we get from these photographs are not the “facts” that happened sequentially, wherein the activities, thoughts, reasoning and events have to follow time’s compelling rule of singular occurrence. In contrast, what we see from these photographs are only the possibilities, which are what may happen, but not have happened, and may happen again. It is not completely closed; it is in transition and not completed. Consequently, these photographs seem to challenge the essence of photography, which once Roland Barthes claimed to be ‘that-has-been’”.
