The Friends of Vietnam Heritage (FVH) History section is hosting a lecture on King Ly Thai To. Those of you who have heard the speaker, Professor Onishi Kazuhiko, before, will know that it will be an excellent lecture and a worthy FVH contribution towards the 1,000th anniversary celebrations.

Ly Thai To was the reigning monarch in Vietnam at the beginning of the last 1,000 years in 1010. The anniversary of the founding of Thang Long – Ha Noi is now being celebrated starting from this date. Ly Thai To’s statue now dominates the park next to Hoan Kiem lake. He is revered as a national hero and the 1000th anniversary party started in that park on 10th October. However, all history is a mixture of ‘fact’ and mythology. Prof. Onishi will attempt to reveal the reality and analyse Ly Thai To, the Ly dynasty and their influence on Vietnamese history. Prof. Onishi is a researcher who has lived in Ha Noi for 18 years. His interests are in Vietnamese religion, culture and history.

Please note: The lecture will be given in Japanese with English translation.
