A very special exhibition in honour of Vu Dan Tan (1946-2009) opens in Salon Natasha one year after his death.
Unwilling to accept the power of real money in the real world, Vu Dan Tan fabricates their more “valuable” substitutes, loudly announcing his faith that its beauty and nothing else, which will save the world.
From the press release:
Vu Dan Tan’s money series, created over a period of nearly a decade from 1994 onwards, presents a rich tapestry of information and signs. Its iconography, in combination with the work’s conceptual premise of exchange, makes for a sequence designed by the artist to be experienced and understood on many levels. Embodying Vu Dan Tan’s unfailing humanism, the work, pan-cultural in reach –the artist depicts the euro, Hong Kong dollar, dinar, and pound, amongst others-, also celebrates connections between peoples and their cultures.
Putting medium astutely at the service of concept, Vu, free as ever in his meshing of idea, icon, and form, cryptically tells the story of our times while also engaging us in a dance with the big principles of life and spirit. Intellectually elegant, medium-savvy, aesthetically accessible, and subtly critical, Vu Dan Tan’s money series embodies Southeast Asian contemporary practice at its most accomplished.
