Lecture on Kitchen God and Tet Celebration
Wed 26 Jan 2011, 6 – 8.30 pm
Hanoi Club
From Friends of Vietnam Heritage:
You are invited to a special Tet lecture by Professor Le Van Lan! The lecturer will explain the origins and rituals of Tet, and give everyone an opportunity to celebrate the Kitchen Gods and release their own traditional fish into the lake. Emperor’s clothing (made of paper) will be burnt as an offering to the Kitchen Gods. We will also be able to sample a wide range of traditional Tet food!
The Kitchen God (Ông Táo) ritual is the start of preparations for Tet. This celebration marks the day when the three kitchen gods travel on the back of a fish to the Jade Emperor in the sky. The kitchen gods report to the Jade Emperor on the good and the bad of the family and will hopefully bring back good fortune for the family on the evening of Tet.
