From Tu Do Gallery:

You are invited to the exhibition of 34 oil paintings themed “Impressions on Sapa” of artist To Ngoc Thanh. In this exhibition, a series of colourful paintings about Sapa, the village scenery, traditional customs and activities… The colours are contrasted with each other but somehow still harmonious under the warm spring sunlight…

Artist TO NGOC THANH is the son of the famous Vietnamese TO NGOC VAN. In 1946 when the national resistance began, To Ngoc Thanh and his family evacuated to Viet Bac war Zone where his father was the first Headmaster of the College of Fine Arts.

Artist To Ngoc Thanh started to paint from the age of 4. Once back to Hanoi in 1954, he had been dreaming about returning to the northwest area. Throughout his childhood living in the mountainous areas, he became very familiar with all shades of green: the green from the grass, the trees, the mountains, the colour of the soil together with the people and every day activities. However, as an Impressionist painter, To Ngoc Thanh has a policy to draw on the spot that he strictly follows. For him, he can’t draw Sapa while sitting in his room in Hanoi. In the later years, he spent more time in Sapa than  in Hanoi.
