KVT – Sound Stuff under the Big Top

To introduce the very laudable charity of the night, highlighting the plight of child autism in Vietnam, Moller retreated to a Michael Jackson Save the World type piece and an emotive Elton John-sy bit accompanied by a group of appealing autistic kids helped along by some famous names from the local music scene…. and this set the scene for the next act.

The much touted Japanese duo of Takahiro Kido and Yuki Murata looked fragile and vulnerable on stage and started off their set with a piano solo that was a bit of a disappointing mix of Richard Clayderman meets far too florid Debussy and flower-filled Tchaikovsky with an overused base pedal that collided with Billy Joel and Elton (if only we could leave that over-rated old man behind in dim musical memories!!!!!!!!). Their next pieces were a trifle anaemic, a trifle tedious and didn’t seem to take the experimental music genre out of the seventies pot-smoking back-room style. Nice chill out stuff but stuff that didn’t seem to address their reputations as musicians experimenting with neoclassical/post rock.

At one stage they started to rev up the tempo to a great beat and sound until the guitar blew a fuse.

The duo seemed to grab the attention of the teen kids and a few oldies still stuck in their vapid teen dreams.

It was a real anticipation then to know that two Austrian DJs/composers/music curators/sound artists were next up with their computers and electronic equipment. Manni Montana (luckily not in the same scene as Hannah) and Susie Rogenhofer (Sweet Susie) set up their equipment and copious wires and were off in duo with a heavy, though adult, techno beat nicely scarred with enviro sounds dancing across it. For a while I was back at Bondi Beach on New Year’s Eve in 2000 at a colossal dance party for 2000 foreigners far from home, organized by a friend and sound entrepreneur. One dark and smokey pavilion room stormed to the sounds of experimental DJ music… ecstasy stuff.
