KVT – The Plus Plus Side of a Jack Hammer
This one is totally gorgeous (and part of the reason I think so is that…not only am I ga ga about old fashioned Hanoi bikes… I go totally ape over cheap Chinese printed cotton – can’t get enough of it!)
Then there was my favorite Hanoian old lady, plus her old best friend seated on a bed mat plus couple of the younger generation preening nearby…whose apparel is probably the reason the old lady is trying to escape through the plate glass and the other just studiously ignoring them.
The remarkably life-like sculptures are the work of shop owner Tran Thuc, who is also responsible for the objects on the bottom floor.
Tran Thuc’s wonderful 3 floors of art works (and I’ve only mentioned a few here as I’m leaving the rest for a future visit …hopefully not one forced by jackhammers) are called CUA HANG MY THUAT or Art Showroom and is at 274 Nghi Tam…and you can’t miss it because that delightful old lady will be beckoning at you from the second floor window.
It’s a delightful addition to the Hanoi art scene and is a really welcoming place to visit.
Kiem Van Tim is a keen observer of life in general and the Hanoi cultural scene in particular and offers some of these observations to the Grapevine. KVT insists that these observations and opinion pieces are not critical reviews. Please see our Comment Guidelines / Moderation Policy and add your thoughts in the comment field below. |
Thank you for this expose on your discovery.
In a way what you describe is a form of “street art” — with its own local flavor — I would think.
And yes, one can not escape feeling curious in Hanoi: the sheer pleasure of letting your eyes “walk” on the objects, the scenery, the people & what they do — non stop bounty for the senses — somehow unexpected — in spite of its familiarity…
