From TNT Theatre Britain:

The company  are delighted to return to Vietnam for their fifth national tour. We are presenting what many regard as Shakespeare’s masterpiece: KING LEAR.  Old King Lear asks each of his three daughters to publicly declare their love for him and then plans to divide his kingdom between them and devote himself to care free pleasures.

But his favourite and youngest daughter refuses to go along with this ritual and is banished by her angry father. But once his other daughters have power they reveal their true nature. They are brutal and selfish and care nothing for their father. Eventually they take away all he has and throw him out into the wilderness during a terrible storm.  Lear is only saved when his youngest daughter, Cordelia, comes back to save him.  But the evil sisters have their revenge and the nation falls into civil war as sister fights sister and love, trust and common  humanity struggle against selfishness, betrayal and cruelty. This is an epic that blends poetry with drama, thrilling action with tender familial love,  war and peace, romance with violence and tears with laughter.

King Lear 1

The production is historically set and mirrors the style of Shakespeare’s own time, concentrating on the wonderful skills of the top class actors rather than large sets. The actors play the marvellous and evocative score themselves on cello, violin, percussion and sing five part harmony. The composer is Thomas Johnson, one of Britain’s best know theatre composers who has had productions in the West End of London. The director is Paul Stebbings, who has directed all of TNT’s touring productions in Vietnam and is a multi award winning international director. King Lear is played by the British based American actor John Moraitis, a veteran of many stage and film productions including Martin Scorcese’s GOODFELLAS.

The production has been seen in Britain, China, Japan, Ireland, Germany, Scandinavia, Malta, Cambodia, Holland, Austria and Switzerland and has received unanimously excellent reviews.

We look forward too returning to Vietnam and promise the audience in that wonderful country a theatrical feast: a dynamic and exciting production of what might just be the  best play ever written!
