The First Meeting of Film Studies Group (FSG)
Fri 05 Jul 2013, 6 – 9 pm
C0 Seminar room – Goethe Institut
From DOCLAB:
After the launch of DocLab Film Studies Group (FSG) in the MiniDOCfest, the first meeting of the group, planned as an initial exploration of “Film and Reality”, will be organized on Friday, July 5th 2013, from 18h to 21h, at C0 Seminar room- Goethe Institut – 56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ha Noi.
Since this meeting, Hanoi DocLab FSG will meet regularly every six weeks, discussing three intertwining major themes in film studies: Representation (Film and Reality, Film and Gender, Film and Race, etc.), Aesthetics (Editing, Personal Film, Essay Film, Experimental Film, etc.), and Film Criticism Discourses. The plan for each meeting will be communicated to you at least three days before the event.
We encourage a space that treasures every speaking being. Your free expressions about film and filmmaking will be valuable contributions. There will be no so-called “master language” framing the discussions. Instead, we expect the vibration, clash, interaction and non-interaction of languages on the moving image.
Issue No 1: Film and Reality
The relationship between “film” and “reality” is a recurrent issue in discussions about film. Figuring out the possibilities of this relationship is challenging, whether to make film or to enjoy film. Words such as “film” and “reality” open up plenties of colors and flavors of meanings. For an initial investigation into the relationship between film and reality, the first meeting of Hanoi DocLab FSG invites you to watch several short films and exchange your thoughts on how the filmmakers approach reality. Your conversations will constitute the main body of the meeting. Apart from that, based on the screened films, the film selecter will share her personal stories and briefly introduce some common concepts in film studies such as “discourse”, “anthropology”/ “ethnography”, “critical”, and “reflexivity”.
Vietnamese will be the main language for the meeting. However, as many participants can speak English, the meeting does not exclude English.
Facilitater: Phùng Hà Thanh, a DocLab member, currently a PhD candidate in Educational Studies at Michigan State University.
