KVT’s Pre Tet Tidbits… Monkeys in Hanoi
Revisiting the works of Thai Nhat Minh
Went to Dong Phong Gallery at 3 Ly Dao Thanh to see an amazing show about fish in small puddles (more about that later) and came away invigorated because of some Monkeys
Thai Nhat Minh’s randy monkeys must be about the best Tet cebidae primates on show in town, getting ready to host their special lunar year… but if you want to see the three of them you’ll have to get along to Dong Phong Gallery – which is a fabulously peaceful little place to enter and take a few deep breaths and escape from the Tet travails and frenzies that have enveloped the city center
Unfortunately the bright little boys aren’t for sale but are delightful to pretend you are out and about and Tet partying with.
They reminded me of the sculptor’s almost too-good-for-words rutting dogs at Manzi in 2014
Not that all of Thai Nhat Minh’s sculptural output is fixated on having fun with their nether region bits and pieces, as is attested by another aluminum shape on a pedestal in a corner
Which led me back to 2013 and his brilliant birds @ the Hanoi Museum of Art
Thai Nhat Minh’s birds are totally beautiful and for a great show of them see here
And with the same avian theme the artist just about surpassed himself with window sculptural cutouts at Manzi last year
BUT FOR NOW IT’S THE MONKEY WHO REIGNS SUPREME AS HE GRABS THE TITLE FROM THE GOAT.
