In the backdrop of the 30th anniversary of “Đổi Mới” – the name given to the 1986 economic reform known as the ‘Renovation Policy’ that would transform Vietnam – on-going podcast series “The Renovation Generation” shares portraits of those born after the reform was implemented.

The series is produced by Eliza Lomas and Fabiola Buchele, both of whom have been Hanoi based for the last three years and been involved in various media projects in the art and culture scene of the city.

They meet and talk with 30 graphic artists, hardcore metal stars, gallery curators, hip hop artists, poets, entrepreneurs and everything in-between. In unprecedented times of peaceful prosperity, these Vietnamese are writing their own scripts, living lives that were merely a dream thirty years previously.

With Đổi Mới came flooding international trade, foreign alliances, and increased economic prosperity. They talk about the unique challenges of a generation with such an enormous discrepancy between themselves and everyone born within the same national borders before them.

The stories shared in these podcasts are personal: about love, boundaries, parents, and freedom, yet also part of a universal discourse, in the dawn of the digital revolution, increasing globalization and shrewd capitalism.

So far the series has portrayed:

#1 Vu Dinh Trong Thang – The 1996-born lead singer of the indie-rock group Ngọt.
#2 Vu Hong Linh – A journalist, teacher, and one extremely kind soul.
#3 Nguyen Hoang Giang – A vina-kitsch multi-faceted artist.
#4 Duong Bui – A metalcore front woman who utters screams from hell and sings like an angel.

All portraits are available on their SoundCloud page:

Fabiola Buchele is the co-founder and managing editor of & Of Other Things, an independent, bi-lingual online publication for contemporary Vietnam. She also works as a freelance journalist in print and radio.
