Come to join workshop ‘Dzó Paper Lamp’ under the instruction of light sculptor Thu Kim Vu.
Profoundly inspired by Japanese paper texture in combination with light, Thu Kim Vu has gained popularity for her unique light sculpture works. At the moment, her solo exhibition “Into Darkness” is being open to public until the end of May at Manzi.
This is an experimentation workshop for art lover, to build a lampshade using different technique of wire frame construction, paper cutting, drawing, folding and interacting with lighting. The workshop will not only teach you how to make a lamp but also to visualize how to build a light sculpture from an LED light bulb, in which each individual could develop his/her own imagination, characteristics, personal style with funky shape, colours, decorative ornaments and narrative stories.
*Requirement: 15 years old and above
*Number of participants: 20 maximum
*Admission fee: 500,000 VND including the following materials prepared by us:
– 1 LED light bulb with 3 meters of electric cord and a plug.
– One stand for the lamp.
– 4 sheets of paper. Other materials can be found to contribute for the work.
– Small brushes, flat brush, masking tape
– Wire frame, rice glue

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Thu Kim Vu was born in 1976 in Hanoi. She graduated her BFA from Hanoi University of Fine Arts, Vietnam and her MFA from the School of the Art Institutre of Chicago, United States. Focus on line drawing, paper material and using temporary spaces, she had been working on different projects through traveling to create a new experience based on how her line drawing changing the atmostphere of each space. Vu has been participated in a number of residencies worldwide which contribute a great influence in shaping her works into many directions.
Vu has participated in a variety of international residency programs such as Vermont Studio Center (USA), New York Mills Regional cultural center Minnesota (USA), Goyang National Art Studio (South Korea), Sanskriti Kendra (India), Kuenstlerdorf Schoeppingen (Germany), Mc Coll Center of Visual Art (USA), Rockefeller Bellagio Center (Italy) and Can Serrat International Residency (Spain). From these trips, she developed her new ideas in working with maps drawing on papers.
In the past three years, Vu was interested in Japanese culture and her studies of Washi paper leads her to new experimentation with paper sculpture and lighting based on her current experience in three residencies in Japan: Kamiyama Artists in Residence Program, Mino Paper Art Village and Sapporo Artist in Residence Program. Recently, Thu has been an artist in residence in Johannesburg, South Africa sponsored and organized by Sylt Foundation. She became interested in the culture of Soweto and community works here.
