From the organizer:
PLAY always keeps us stay at present and joy.
Reading materials about play such as Playwork and the theory of loose parts; How NOT to cheat Children the Theory of Loose Parts; and Play in the Early Year-Key to School Success, I realize there is much more thing I need to learn. Play is a serious business with combination of art and science and I am now downed in the ocean of this knowledge.
Reflecting all theories to my childhood I can now understand creative educational philosophy and how play affects and empower personal development in term of building trust, self-esteem, self-confidence. To nurture creativity and inner leadership skills for children, the teacher’s key role is observer. Direction, guidance are use when necessary only so that children have a chance to self-direct to what they really want to play, to act out. Children can really embody our experience and expression of personal creativity.
Play is the natural way of self-expression which is given the children to play out their feelings, and thoughts, problems. While we play, we move, and when our bodies move, the feelings are expressed. We act out all our hidden thoughts, emotions, and character authentically. The same to dance/ movement therapy, play is the process and we all enjoy moment of the here and now. We have interaction, reflection and communicate to each other.
Play provides benefits for cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and moral development (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2006; Elkind, 2007) for children from all socio-economic, cultural. It’s through play that we become human. Play informs our adult world. Not that we are thinking of this when we play as children, of course. As adults, however, we should be aware that real playing is almost the most important thing that our children can do.
It is worth nothing that children all over the world, when allowed to play freely, develop every similar play patterns. It is through this playing that children integrate their internal and external worlds and linguistic backgrounds (Zigler, E. & Bishop-Josef, S., 2006). To provide these benefits, play must be consciously facilitated by skilled teachers, who are well-trained in observing children and in understanding how play contributes to the children’s mastery of concepts and skills.
