You are invited to the artist talk PORTFOLIO REVIEW + A TALK ABOUT PHOTOBOOK by Trâm Nguyễn & James Brown.

‘… a good photobook should “contain great work”, should “have a design that complements what is being dealt with”, should “function as a concise world within itself ” and should “deal with content that sustains an ongoing interest”. Should, not must.’ (David Campany, 2014)

The book, or photobook, has offered a means of presentation and communication for photographs since the first days of the medium. It is only over the past decade, however, with the resurgence in printed matter, that the format has moved to the forefront of contemporary photography. Unlike most other forms of presentation, the photobook offers a photographer the chance to substantially tell a story, and the opportunity to reach an audience in a direct and intimate manner. The session will cover a brief discussion on the photobook as a medium within photography and contemporary art, our selection of contemporary artists books and NB’s first book, FOLK by Aaron Schuman.

Prior to the session is a chance for 6 practicing photographers to have an informal review session with us. Complete projects and works in progress in all realms of photographic arts are welcome. You will be able to present your work to the group and receive feedback to further strengthen your practice. Each artist will have 10 minutes to present their work, receive feedback and questions from us before opening up to the group for further comments. These sessions will be conducted in English and Vietnamese.

ABOUT NB

NB is an independent art publisher based in London, UK. Trâm Nguyễn (b. 1992, Hanoi) and James Brown (b. 1992, Leeds) are based in London. Tram holds an MA in Contemporary Art from Sotheby’s Institute of Art and BA Photographic Arts from University of Westminster. Now she does general ‘art’ things. James currently works within art publishing.
