This workshop will explore the core fundamentals of Muti’s specific experimental movement techniques, choreographic practices and artistic ideologies, developed from working 4 years with Avant Garde Dance. He will facilitate you to explore the possibility of combining hip hop and contemporary dance, incorporate hip hop qualities, movement concepts into your performance style.

The raw jagged yet clean qualities of krump, or the tight extension an contractions of lockin’. The powerful echoes of poppin and it’s developed structures and pathways. As we begin to understand the principals behind these hip hop infused styles to embody to develop our own movement language and understanding. Exploring a synchronicity with music to uncover the under tones of music, as we analyse the music as source of power for the movement, conducting new outcomes and new qualities. Through Various hip hop theatre technique we will to explore the diverse pallet of styles and qualities, to bring you a whole new depth of movement possibilities and grow your own developing movement language.

Muti Musafiri comes from a hip hop, spoken word and dance background, pursuing theatre arts and dance from a young age in contemporary dance and various hip hop styles through the vigorous training of the LABAN CAT program, creating and performing full length pieces of work with Shoreditch youth dance touring in Sweden. He then followed training at Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance (SEAD), and then exploring experimental sound and movement expression performance work at Smash Berlin. Muti then facilitated a number of different immersive performative communal events around London.

During the summer of 2015 Muti created J’Agura…means of engagement, then he premiered new site specific piece ’embellished abundance’ as part of the Love Festival at South Bank. Since then he has been performing and touring with Avant Garde Dance company in new works ‘Ku dia ta’, the black album tour ‘the dinner’; curation installation as part of dance umbrella’s the factory and the current Fagin’s Twist UK tour retelling of dark reflection of fagin’s perspective! Muti has worked with National theatre, Salah el Brogy company Dance umbrella, Sadler’s wells, the place and Dance east amongst many more getting an overall understanding of all the dance organisations of the UK and since then taken his work international. After completing Integro Dance Beyond, 1 month residency with Qi gong, haffa yoga, Thai massage, cranial sacral bio dynamic, passing through and flying low with the creator of the technique which has widely influenced his current teaching approach designed to create more holistic teachers.

In 2016, as a choreographer Muti created 2 new Dance theatre work ‘Refractions of Attachment:s’ which premiered at Resolutions at The Place Festival for emerging Choreographers and a solo called ‘Entheogenic’ for Open Arts Surgery as part of breakin’ convention Sadler’s wells, which has been developed into a full 1 hour solo premiered in Waiheke island in New zealand. Since then he has brought his ideas and work in Hanoi, working Quest festival and freeflow festival to create gala shows. Muti has been teaching his O’Muti’ma workshop series in New Zealand and Cambodia, collaborating with a number of different visual artists from all walks of life and mediums with the outlook of innovating new possibilities and experiences.

AVANT GARDE is a London based company pushing the boundaries of hip-hop and contemporary dance. Their dynamic performances have musicality at their core and explore a myriad of styles, themes and media. Their mantra ‘Innovate Never Replicate’ is evident throughout their portfolio of work, and led by Artistic Director Tony Adigun they are committed to producing artistic work that is entertaining and challenging.
