You are a cinemaholic? You love to watch films, to understand and write about films but not making films?

You are looking for a pure theoretical course on how to watch, analyse, understand, write about films and to explore the cinema history in a systematical way, or more simply, how to watch a film the right way?

Join TPD Center’s new Film Studies course!

COURSE PROGRAM

Film analysis – how to watch a film the right way
· Analyse a film’s structure
· How to watch a film?
· Watch a film through the eye of a screenwriter

Cinema theory – Film theory
· Introduction to cinema theories
· Language of cinema
· Framing, shooting, movement, film sequences, montage (location, time)

Cinema history
· The birth of cinema
· Cinema history: American cinema, French New wave and Italian neorealism
· Asian cinema: Japan, Iran and several South East Asian countries
· Important films and film directors/screenwriters

Genres
· Definition of genre, popular film genres
· Characteristics of different genres (tragedy, comedy, action, horror) in terms of content and presentation

Film criticism and writing about films
· How to watch a movie from a film critic’s perspective
· How to write a film preview, film review, film summary, as well as essays, interviews, reports (news) on films
· Introduction to film festivals around the world
· Film degrees available in Vietnam
· Career prospects

COURSE ACTIVITIES

– Watching films (by students): Watching films is a simple yet most important task throughout the course. Only a number of films are required, but the more films students watch, the better. This is the most effective way by which students can get familiar with the theories used in films.
– Reading: Students will be required to read articles, books, research journals on cinema and cinema history, and works by film critics.
– Writing: Students will be required to write reports, reviews and film critiques
– Watching films (at theaters): Students will go to movie theaters (about once a week) and discuss, analyse the films they watch afterwards.
– Discussions with professional filmmakers
