You are invited to the book introduction of “The Rules of Art: Genesis and Structure of the Literary Field” (Vietnamese version) by Pierre Bourdieu with the participation of the following guest speakers:

– Mr. Phùng Ngọc Kiên, PhD., from the Vietnam Institute of Literature
– Phạm Xuân Thạch, PhD., Head of Literature Department at the Hanoi University of Social Sciences and Humanities
– Chu Hảo – Professor, Director of Tri Thuc Publishing House

Pierre Bourdieu is one of the grand figures among French social science researchers who had a wide influence on the world in the later half of the 20th century. Under the direct influence of Marx, Weber, Mauss, Durkheim, Cassirer, Althusser, Bacherlard,…, his researches quickly switched from anthropology to social studies, and they were established on a wide foundation cover many fields and sectors of human sciences.

Approached social issues through analyzing reproduction mechanisms and and social stratification, Bourdieu developed many important research tools that can be used in many human science fields. Bourdieu demonstrated his profound thinking, not accepting anything that had been simplified or studied halfheartedly. More than that, he was one of the scientists to join the force supporting social activities of workers, of LGBT people since the 1980s.

Among his most important works is “The Rules of Art: Genesis and Structure of the Literary Field”, which can be considered the result of his 30 years of conducting sociological studies. A cornerstone for the development of the sociology of culture and art – specifically the sociology of literature, the book has become the foundation for several other researchers including P. Casanova, G. Sapiro…
