“An Outline of a Theory of Civilization” is the most important work of Fukuzawa Yukichi and of the Meiji Restoration in Japan. The book was written in 1875 but is influential to the present days, whose several interpretations are still worth pondering in places where ‘independent spirit’ and ‘characteristics of civilization” are yet to be clarified.
Fukuzawa Yukichi is considered as a big thinker during the Meiji Restoration, who started a modern Japanese society and put Japan into the orbit of becoming a modern country.
When he was born in 1835, Japan was only a small, undeveloped land like several other Asian countries compared to the dominant power of the West. But when he passed away in 1901, Japan had became a completely different country which managed to catch up with the nations whose developments were considered to be centuries ahead of Japan’s.
Fukuzawa Yukichi wrote a lot, but only a few of his works have been translated into Vietnamese, including “An Encouragement of Learning” and “The Autobiography of Yukichi Fukuzawa”.
