From Okia Cinema:
In the modern age of smart technology, people are more connected yet more lonely than ever… We talk a lot amongst ourselves about the fear of technology and the development of society could intervene – destroy – the profound, long-lasting connection between human and nature. Yet not many could start the journey to return to where we came from.
This week, Okia Cinema presents two excellent movies about the journeys of people who chose to “come back”.
“Into the wild” (2007) by Sean Penn
“Into the wild” is based on a true story of McCandless, adapted from the book of the same name. It tells a story of a journey across the nations – a journey of finding one’s self – to find the way back to the roots deep within us… “Into the wild” at first is just an expression. But at the end, it became a revelation for the character and for us ourselves.
The adventure of McCandless is amazing and admirable, and even if we put aside living symbols or philosophical metaphors, the narrative of “Into the wild” is still wonderfully captivating. That was the reason why the movie was nominated for two Golden Globes and then won Best Original Song. It also had two Oscar nominations, with Hal Holbrook nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
Watch the trailer:
The film starred Emile Hirsch as McCandless, Marcia Gay Harden and William Hurt as his parents, and others – Catherine Keener, Vince Vaughn, Kristen Stewart, and Hal Holbrook.
“Into the wild”, with Sean Penn’s bizarre sophistication – is exactly a clever, wonderful and passionate detox dose for human living in the contemporary, polluted society.
“Captain Fantastic” (2016) by Matt Ross. A movie truly made for modern families.
If in “Into the wild”, the main character returns to nature to be alone, to escape from social ties of the modern world, in “Captain Fantastic”, a crowded family (who has been living separately from human community for decades), due to circumstances, has to returned to the noose that they chose to stay away from.
And so the journey of a father and his 6 children of all ages are dotted with troubles, drama, and surprises… and of course, oh so captivating! And with it the never-ending debate on how to raise our children: should we be in the arms of Mother Nature, or should we be protected and care for with love and artificial living conditions.
This eccentric family, has soon chosen nature as the perfect shelter, the children are born and raised amidst nature. But the way their parents severed all ties with society has pushed them into a “situation” where they are isolated.
The movie is chosen as one of ten independent movies of the years by the National Critics Association, with Mortensen nominated for Golden Globe Best Actor and for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the 70th British Academy Film Awards.
