You are invited to the exhibition “Lam” (Blue) by the Vietnamese SonTa (Lacquer) Artists Group. This is the fourth exhibition in recognition of the 5th anniversary of the establishment of the group (2013–2018).

The exhibition will display more than 50 lacquer paintings by 25 artists who combine basic techniques of lacquer painting and traditional painting. It also focuses on a highly challenging requirement, which is that all artworks must be painted in blue. This color is hardly used for lacquer paintings because the traditional color tone is limited in vermilion (red pigment refined from minerals that have a mercury sulfide base), black and brown refined from sap of sumac, and some other materials such as silver leaves and gold leaves, eggshells, seashells…

Founded in 2013 and having held three exhibitions with hundreds of artworks displayed in Hanoi, this group of Vietnamese lacquer artists has become a professional, active one in Vietnam’s art scene. They have helped to popularize traditional art values both domestically and internationally.
