From the organizers:

You are invited to the screening of “Camouflage: Vietnamese Brush Strokes with History“, a 2017 documentary directed by Bestor Cram and produced by David Thomas. David will be present at the screening.

Art has the unique power to provide the tools and platforms to bring communities together to engage in challenging conversations. In 1987, seven years before the lifting of the U.S. trade embargo and eight years before the normalization of relations, David Thomas traveled to Vietnam with a group of educators in the U.S. Indochina Reconciliation Project. This was his first return to Vietnam since serving as a U.S. Army combat artist/engineer in Pleiku, South Vietnam, in 1969-70. During this trip Thomas met with then Deputy Director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, Mr. Nguyen Van Chung, and the idea for the first major cultural exchange project between the United States and Vietnam took root. Since then, Indochina Arts Partnership (IAP) has sponsored about 70 Vietnamese artists as fellows to visit study in the United States. The IAP engages and cultivates art communities between the United States of America and Southeast Asia by activating partnerships and collaborations, developing resources that empower artists and creative projects, and furthering the boundaries of art in its intersection with other disciplines.

Now embarking on a film project with the acclaimed filmmaker Bestor Cram of the award winning Northern Light Productions, www.nlprod.com David Thomas produces yet another art production revealing the power of art to heal and transform.

The film centers around multiple generations of Vietnamese painters who discuss their work as a revelation of sacrifice and courage. Within the backdrop of modern Vietnam a little known view of the aftermath of America’s war emerges showing what has been concealed, what has been hidden, what has been camouflaged.
