About artist: Xuân Lam (born 1993) is a visual artist based in Hanoi. He graduated from Vietnam University of Fine Art with a degree in Fine Art in 2016. With his practice combines painting, collage, sculpture and digital art, Xuan Lam’s art is a Rubik’s Cube – where each surface explores the forgotten aspects of the Vietnamese culture, at times independent or interconnected, forming an endless flow of heritage and time. Xuân Lam has spent more than 7 years studying Vietnamese folk paintings with two solo exhibitions “Folk Paintings: The Remake” (2017) and “Rendezvous between The Old and The New” (2019). In addition to his independent work, Lam also collaborates with local design brands and participates in non-profit projects with the hope to bring Vietnamese fine art and contemporary art closer to young people and the general audiences; notably the project Public Art for Better Space on Phung Hung Street (2018) and the Phuc Tan – Red River Public Art Project (2020) in Hanoi. Xuân Lam also the First Prize winner at multiple art competitions, his works are also included in the collections of the Embassy of Germany, Embassy of Italy and Vietnam’s National Assembly Hall.

Activities in 2020 – 2022: In 2022, Xuân Lam received a Fulbright scholarships from the US government for the Masters of Fine Arts programme at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD); his proposal for a solo project is also selected for the 2022 Young Artists Incubation Programme by Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA). At the invitation of the Netherlands Embassy in Vietnam, he collaborates to create the work “Trái ngon mình nhìn, chứ mình không ăn” – a ceramic five-fruit tray and a special rendition of the Hàng Trống folk painting “Xích Hổ” on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Netherlands – Vietnam diplomatic relations. Xuân Lam’s study and revival of Vietnamese cultural heritage is also continued through various activities, such as the creation of new folk paintings with researcher Nguyễn Thị Thu Hòa in a project reviving Kim Hoàng folk art, and the collaboration with young designer Phan Đăng Hoàng in Milan Fashion Week. His installation of 36 lanterns was also exhibited at the 22 Hang Buom Center for Art and Culture within the framework of Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2022.

HANOI GRAPEVINE’s FINEST is an annual event that honors contemporary art projects in Vietnam. The event is organized and nominated by Hanoi Grapevine and the general audience.

The event aims to honor individuals, organizations, creative art projects & activities as well as artists who are 35 or younger who have made impacts on the community in order to encourage the development of local creative arts, to promote greater communication and to further spread the influence of art and culture in the community.

In an effort to give the most comprehensive and objective view, HANOI GRAPEVINE’s FINEST always offers different formats in each edition. This year, Hanoi Grapevine’s Finest 2023 is divided into two major categories: Honouring and Recognition.
