The Grapevine Selection, was initiated by Hanoi Grapevine’s founder – artist Brian Ring in 2013. The exhibition series The Grapevine Selection is an initiative within Hanoi Grapevine’s mission plan, which is to promote Vietnam’s arts and culture at home and abroad.

In 2024, the Hanoi Grapevine team wants to focus on and promote the flexible perspectives and standards of pioneering organisers and individuals who invest in research and private art collections, each with their distinct perspective that is independent and full of aesthetics, as well as transcending the oppressive biases of the current society. Therefore, this year’s art advisory board is diversified, including art researcher/curator Do Tuong Linh, collector/head of an art organisation Ariel Pham, and international researcher/collector Sophie Huang.

With the vision of The Grapevine Selection exhibition as a contribution to the foundation of the creative industry and art market in Vietnam, the choice of space enhances the experience of contemporary works while also partly facilitating a dialogue between history and modernity, tradition and innovation.

ARTIST: NGUYỄN DUY MẠNH

Nguyễn Duy Mạnh is a visual artist and a member of the Vinh Phuc Literature and Arts Association and Vietnam Fine Arts Association. Born in 1984 in Vinh Phuc, Mạnh currently lives and works in Hanoi. In 2016, Nguyễn Duy Mạnh presented his solo exhibition “Inner Space” at the Vietnam Museum of Fine Arts, marking a turning point in creation & composition.

Nguyễn Duy Mạnh’s practice is diverse in many materials and forms, most recently ceramic. Mạnh’s ceramic works are highly experimental with compositions of broken points and unique highlights on traditional patterns. In Mạnh’s words, “Ceramics, like humans, have their own cultural values and spiritual life, and I can’t tell if I’m speaking the ceramic language or the ceramics is speaking mine.”

Two of Nguyễn Duy Mạnh’s most recent ceramic works, “Flower in the soil” (2022) and “Puddle of flowers” (2022), are currently on display at the exhibition “The Grapevine Selection | Lựa chọn của Grapevine”.

Lâm Na was born in 1987 in Vinh. She graduated from Hue University of Fine Arts in 2011 and Mahasarakham University in 2014.

Lâm Na’s practice includes various materials, although she began focusing on terracotta in 2022. According to Lâm Na, “the land seems to maintain a silent state, silently receiving everything and constantly transformed.” She was touched by the courageous land that quietly takes the most intense things with tremendous courage.

In addition to her debut solo exhibition “Have been – Eternally” (2023) at Hanoi Studio Gallery, Lâm Na has actively engaged in group exhibitions and art projects in Vietnam and Thailand, including the exhibition exhibition “The Grapevine Selection | Lựa chọn của Grapevine” organised by Hanoi Grapevine in 2015.
