From the organizer:
Vietnamese love using the word ‘duyên’. When they meet someone gorgeous and lovable, they praise them as ‘có duyên’. When they find a perfect match, they feel both are ‘có duyên’. One side is beauty, the other is compatibility, but each embraces and delivers a sweet message. Through generations, knitted into everyday Vietnamese expressions, ‘duyên’ has been an intimate and elegant concept. But if you take a look deeper, you’ll find that ‘duyên’ in Vietnamese also means bond of fate, or prearranged destiny.
Hidden beneath the semantic layer sometimes lies a broader cultural picture. Language allows us to see the life of natives, opening a door into how people live, love, care, and even honor the sacred. ‘Duyên’ is significant as it doesn’t only describe beauty but also the spiritual connection of a person’s past lives.
True to its name, the event ‘Spiritual beliefs through Vietnamese everyday expressions’ will explore some common Vietnamese catchphrases and expressions – ‘trộm vía’ (steal the earthly soul), ‘duyên’ (past-life connection), ‘trúng gió’ (hit by the wind), ‘hết hồn’ (out of heavenly soul)… We will break each “term” down, explain the context, uncover the cultural background stories, and learn how they are used today.
The event is organized by GIAO – Viet Hidden Gems, a platform dedicated to introducing diverse aspects of Viet community – people, language, art, religious beliefs, customs, and more – through aged and new lenses. We’d love to bring cultural knowledge and events to friends who love culture. The event will be held at an artsy and cozy space, so this is a chance for you to explore another hidden gem in Saigon.
