The panel talk “here/there – Crafting Connections: Contemporary Perspectives on Design, Culture, and Space” is a sideline event of the exhibition of the same name – a long-term cross-cultural exchange project aiming at promoting contemporary design, handicraft and artistic practices between Vietnam and Australia.

At the event, 04 talented young artists who won the 2024 Design Talent Awards – Huu Khoa, Vo Ngoc Thanh Tien, Trang Do, and Sam (Dao Manh Khang) – will share their journeys and the evolution of their creative visions for community-focused projects, from designing communal spaces to creative storytelling, as well as new explorations in lighting design, sustainable handicraft, and communications.

Moderator: Becky Lu

Becky Lu (Lư Ngọc Phụng) is a British-born Vietnamese Chinese multidisciplinary artist and educator. Working in higher education since 2012, she specialises in printing and illustration, integrating immersive technology and storytelling into her narrative-driven works. Her research interests include the Vietnamese diaspora, multi-world perspectives, cultural heritage, and community engagement, with a focus on relationships and interactions within and between creative ecosystems.

Becky Lu is a Project Coordinator for đây đó (here/there) and the RMIT University Vietnam representative for the project.

About here/there

đây đó (here/there) is a long-term cross-cultural exchange project involving Vietnamese and Australian designers, artists, and craft practitioners.

The project aims to promote contemporary design and artistic practices while preserving traditional art forms amid rapid development and global challenges such as sustainable design practices. It creates opportunities for cultural, economic, and knowledge exchange over the course of many years and creates an opportunity for showcasing emerging art, craft, and design practices.

This year’s designers, Võ Ngọc Thanh Tiến, Trang Do, Đào Mạnh Khang (Sâm), and Hữu Khoa have been developing projects exploring themes of community and storytelling. In August, Võ Ngọc Thanh Tiến travelled to Melbourne and presented her work at a pop-up exhibition at RMIT First Site Gallery as part of the cultural exchange.

RMIT University’s ongoing project serves as a dynamic platform that celebrates the power of craft, cultural exchange, and innovative thinking, cultivating fresh perspectives on the relationship between design, culture, and the built environment.

Project Coordinators: Becky Lu, Professor Grace McQuilten, Thao Nguyen, and Dr Tammy Wong Hulbert.

Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design 2024 is organised by RMIT University Vietnam in collaboration with Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies (VICAS). Hexagon and Viral Town serve as event partners, alongside a diverse array of individuals, groups, organisations, enterprises in the creative industries, with Behalf by Pencil as the creative partner and Hanoi Grapevine as the media partner.
