From the organizer:
Born from a persistent and deeply human observation process, The Last Journey of Sister Phụng is the debut feature-length documentary by director Nguyễn Thị Thắm — a rare work in contemporary Vietnamese cinema that centers on the marginalized lives of nameless, voiceless individuals.
With a non-judgmental perspective and just enough distance to truly listen, the film follows a traveling fair troupe across the provinces of Central and Southern Vietnam, where makeshift stages become a refuge for tattered yet resilient dreams. At its heart is Sister Phụng—a transgender woman leading the troupe—portrayed as both proud and strong, yet fragile and filled with profoundly human concerns.
Filmed over five months and completed over five years (2009–2014), the documentary stands as a testament to the filmmaker’s patient and immersive journey alongside real lives. Premiered at the Cinéma du Réel Film Festival (France) and subsequently showcased at numerous international film festivals from Southeast Asia to the U.S. and Taiwan, The Last Journey of Sister Phụng not only marks a milestone in Vietnamese documentary filmmaking but also opens a humane space for reflection, where audiences confront questions about gender, existence, and the cost of freedom.
