From the organizer:
Modern Totem is an international artist-in-residency program founded in 2024 with two pioneering Vietnamese resident artists: Phạm Huy Thông and Thaors. Launched as part of the Ồ Ạt Festival framework, it continues to evolve in its second edition in 2025. The program provides an experimental space for artists to examine, interpret, and reconstruct the concept of the totem in contemporary society through diverse artistic practices.
Traditionally, totems symbolized deep spiritual connections to nature, ancestry, and community within indigenous cultures. In today’s world, these connections are transformed, symbols of reverence now emerge from consumerism, technology, and politics.
Modern Totem asks: What are the new rituals of modern society, and can they form a new system of totems? It invites artists to critically explore and redefine contemporary sacred objects, be they branded commodities, digital data, or intangible processes of value-making.
After nearly two months in residence, Ồ Ạt is proud to present the initial outcomes of the participating artists:
– Dương Diệu Linh
– Mzung Nguyễn
– Minoru Suwa
– Nguyễn Khôi
– Yumie Saito
