From the organizer:

Project Đẩy Sàn and the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Ho Chi Minh City, MORUA, and venue partner Ho Chi Minh City Dance School, are thrilled to present “the storm/ saigon” – a program of workshop and public showcase hosted by the acclaimed Japanese performance artist group contact Gonzo.

Based on “the storm” – contact Gonzo’s recent collaborative project with dot architects in Osaka, Japan, this workshop invites participants in Vietnam to explore shockingly simple movements and voices, mimicking ocean waves, as if a storm is approaching. An opportunity to move, experiment, and have fun together! The workshop outcome will be showcased to the public on July 19.

contact Gonzo: is a collective from Osaka, Japan, initiated in 2006 with four members. They combine contact improvisation references with legendary journalist Hunter S. Thompson’s “gonzo” aesthetics. In recent years, contact Gonzo became the focus of increasing attention in both the performing arts and contemporary art scenes.

Masamitsu Araki: is a Kyoto-based artist, composer, and sound designer. His practice is both music-centered and located on the fringes of music, pursuing the creativity of listening through humorous approaches and prompting us to rethink contexts and effects by reconnecting that creativity with music. His recent work includes Vacant TT (2024), a performance created with workshop participants, and the outdoor concert Soundtrack for Midnight TAMURO (2021), featuring an “orchestra” of custom cars.

Project Đẩy Sàn (PĐS) is a collaborative project that fosters learning, collaboration, and experimentation for emerging Vietnamese performance artists. It was founded in 2024 by Cùng Bóc Hành collective, The Run – A Theater Project and Goethe-Institut HCM.

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam was inaugurated in Hanoi in March 2008 with the approval of the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Vietnam. As an overseas representative office of the Japan Foundation, the Center collaborates extensively with numerous Vietnamese government agencies, cultural and artistic organizations, and educational institutions to implement initiatives in three core areas: Arts & Cultural exchange, Japanese language education, and Japanese studies alongside international dialogue.
