From the organizer:
The Onion Cellar continues its monthly film curation at CAMA ATK, this time with an official screening of Noise and Resistance – a documentary about European DIY Punk scene. The screening is the next step on the “alternative” road that has been going through every ATK / Onion Cellar collaboration, from We Don’t Care about Music Anyway to last month’s Black Power Mixtape.
The 21st century. The age of the Money God, multinational corporations and bankers with ridiculously huge bonuses, the age of living your life out in some megalopolis doing mundane jobs (that you hate) until your retirement a few years before your death. Capitalism.
But as they say, “Every heart is a revolutionary cell”. There is always a thriving underground within even the most mind-numbing mainstream.
Noise and Resistance (dir – Francesca Araiza Andrande & Julia Ostertag) takes you straight to that underground. It is a film about DIY Punk, though it concerns itself not with a shallow definition of what Punk music is (it actually appears in various forms in the film: from British sludge metal to Russian underground hip-hop); rather, the film is a detailed exploration of the Punk spirit, of what it means to break free from the mainstream and to live in alternative ways.
Catalonian squatters (who double as festival organizers), anti-fascists in Moscow, queer trailer park inhabitants in Berlin, Swedish feminists, Dutch trade unionists, or members of the renowned British CRASS collective, whether they spend time building self-contained communities in Norwegian woods or touring Europe with their own Mexican cashes – the people that we meet in the film all share the same belief: that there are always alternatives to this reality, and they are by no means unrealistic. It is this attitude and of course the musical bond between them that make the scene look like one big, interconnected family. As CRASS’ Penny Rimbauld puts it: it’s not really “Doing It Yourself” – it’s “Doing It Together”. Even if it sometimes means risking your own life.
Noise and Resistance is an authentic and inspiring film, whether you are a sociologist, a fan of Punk (or music in general), a dreamer, or just someone who is curious about the genuine alternatives out there. The film is claimed to “have the best punk sounds you’ve heard for years” – which is justified. Featuring music and appearances from: Penny Rimbauld and Gee Vaucher (CRASS), Moscow Death Brigade, What We Feel, Seein’ Red, La Casa Fantom, Fall Of Efrafa, Sookee, Antimaster, Sju Svara Ar, Radical Cheerleaders, and many others.
