From the organizer:
You are invited to the film screening of “TONY TAKITANI”.
TONY TAKITANI (2004)
Based on a short story by Haruki Murakami
“Born just after World War II, and a few days before his mother’s death, Tony Takitani was named after his father’s American friend…
Tony’s father was a touring jazz musician, which meant that Tony spent a lot of his childhood alone. Tony became skilled at drawing, and while his works were technically precise, they lacked heart.
He became a technical illustrator, but even in his adulthood, his loneliness persisted. That was until he fell in love with a co-worker”
“Jun Ichikawa’s film version of one of Haruki Murakami’s most elegant short stories somehow manages to redefine the whole process of literary adaptation, though with the same quiet, unassuming grace of the original story.
Ichikawa visualises this character study of loneliness as a series of vignettes, ending each scene with a lateral wipe from right to left.. like the turning of a page.”
“In this melancholy tale of a solitary man, Ichikawa adds a grace note of optimism without compromising the sting of loss at the core of the story.”
