HCMC – Galerie Quynh – Wonderland

Opening: Thurs 06 Nov, 6-8pm
Exhibition: 06-29 Nov 2008

Galerie Quynh is pleased to present Wonderland by Vietnamese American artist Tiffany Chung. For her first solo exhibition at the gallery, Chung will present a new body of work comprising six Map paintings, three digital c-prints from Enokiberry tree in wonderland – her sci-fi fantasy photographic comic book series, two new sculptures and a single-channel video.

Full of parody and irony, Chung’s work depicts real and imagined worlds full of beauty and absurdity. Addressing wide reaching and seemingly disparate issues such as our ambivalent relationship with nature, our escapist tendencies, our fates and heroes, at the heart of all the work is the modern city, a subject Chung has explored throughout her career. She states that her work is an attempt “to understand our experience of the city by looking at spatial and cultural transformations linked to economic development in the midst of urbanization.”

Upon obtaining her MFA from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2000, Chung returned to Ho Chi Minh City where she currently lives and works. While she has participated in exhibitions in Europe and in the US (Dahlem Museum, Berlin; Hatch Gallery and LMan Gallery, Los Angeles), she has exhibited more widely in Asia with shows at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan, Arko Museum in Korea and the Chiang Mai Art Museum and National Gallery in Thailand. Chung was most recently included in Strategies from within: an exhibition of Vietnamese and Cambodia contemporary art practices at the Ke Center for Contemporary Art in Shanghai and Intrude Art & Life 366 – a project supported by the Zendai Museum of Modern Art also in Shanghai. Along with artists Tuan Andrew Nguyen, Ha Thuc Phu Nam and founder Dinh Q. Le, Chung is also involved in the programming of San Art, a non-profit art space in Ho Chi Minh City, which cultivates contemporary art through exhibitions, exchanges, workshops and lectures.
