14-19 Dec 2008
Goethe-Institut

Once again, the Goethe-Institut Vietnam offers the opportunity to encounter current German films and thus gain an insight via the screen into contemporary Germany.

German cinema is in an exciting phase. At film festivals in Berlin, in Cannes and even at the Oscars, German films are gaining attention and are suddenly winning prizes again. Young film makers in particular are surprising us with wonderful films, often documentary films which are finding their way back into the cinemas.

In 2008 our films deal with love, death and guilt, but primarily with overcoming (especially national) borders, as well as exploring the particular German sense of ‘Heimat’ and also the confrontation with the other. A cinema hungry for discoveries, in Japan, Iran, Istanbul and also in provincial Germany.

One highlight of this festival is the work of Faith Akin, currently Germany’s most successful director, with his brilliant win at the Berlinale with Gegen die Wand (Against the Wall), and whose Auf der anderen Seite (On the Other Side) has this year been awarded the prize for Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival.

Free tickets available at Goethe-Institut Hanoi.

All films will be shown in original with English subtitles and Vietnamese translation via head-phones
