Summary of the Opera
Different generations
Young people expressing freedom
A group of people that want to be different; they want to stand out from the crowd; they don’t want to be part of society. They think that they are better; they haven’t succumbed into the mainstream. They think they are immortal, untouchable.
The flat is a youth hostel, the group are backpackers. This is to show freedom.
They go to the restaurant to annoy people.
Marcello thinks that love is silly (general opinion in the group). They don’t want to show emotion.
Rodolpho falls in love for the first time. His first encounter with reality. Later death will be his second flash of the real world.
Mimi finds the kindness, love and beauty that she has always dreamt of, but not yet experienced, and almost lost her faith in. It changes her life. She doesn’t think she is worth happiness.
Musetta is a popstar. She is looked up to by the crowd. She uses men for money.
Colline lives in philosophy. He doesn’t participate. He stands at the side. Like Rodolpho, he’s afraid of real life.
Shaunard is a showman. He wants to be seen and adored. But he isn’t.
Alcindoro is a young, rich student. Musetta is his accessory. He wants to be seen with her.
In the last act they are all changed. Their view of life is turned upside down. They face adulthood.
The chorus represent ”ordinary people” as opposed to the subculture of the bohemians. The bohemians deliberately provoke them, and they are annoyed by their presence.
