CROSSING THE BRIDGE – THE SOUND OF ISTANBUL by Fatih Akin

Germany, 2005, Documentary, 90’, Cannes Film Festival 2005, (German & Turkish with English subtitles)

Confucius says : “if you want to know a civilization, you should listen to its music”. After the explosive ‘Head On’ (Golden Bear for Best Film at 54th Berlin International Film Festival), the Turkish German Director Fatih Akin tells a journey through the music scene in modern Istanbul, Turkey (18 millions inhabitants). Akin follows the German musician Alexander Hacke (composer for ‘Head On’ and member of Einstürzende Neubauten) who travels around Istanbul with a mobile recording studio and a microphone, assembling an inspired and blended portrait of Turkish music, from classical arabesque and sufi hypnotic trance to psychedelic rock and hip-hop. Akin depicts Istanbul’s cultural diversity at the crossroad of European and asian influences through its innovative music scene.
