Ian McIntosh is an Australian artist who first came to Vietnam in 1992 and has since returned regularly to travel, to work, and to live for extended periods, usually in Hanoi or HCM City. He has worked across a variety of art mediums including photography, drawings and mixed media paintings. Over the years he has noticed the many great changes taking place in Vietnam, with this sense of change being strongly reflected in his art practice.
His recent paintings were made by collaging together material from newspapers, magazines, advertising and popular culture, over which have been applied layers of Vietnamese language and text. By using a “work in progress” style the artist is interested in creating a loose narrative about the changes taking place in Vietnam, in particular the influence of advertising and the aspirations of people to want a better life.
