KVT – Swept under the carpet

Well, I was really looking forward to getting a seat to see Britten’s little opera but try hard as we could we couldn’t manage to get a look in.

For us culturally unconnected who can’t get to the free ticket rush on the first day of issue at the sponsoring agency, and who are definitely not VIP material, how about putting aside a block of seats in all areas of Nha Hat Lon that we could pay for. There’s a lot of us who don’t mind paying to see good stuff and who would gladly pay for a seat… the money could be regarded as a donation to any good cause.

L’Espace had seats for sale at a brilliant offering in January and it was a relief for a whole crowd of like minded to know that were able to get a good view… funny though that even though the tickets were as cheap as chips, those who only go to the Opera House on Freebies seemed to stay away in droves.

Now I know that the whole idea of the free tickets is to democratically make the performances available to all, regardless of status and this is wonderful, especially if the takers are the under-privileged or students. I also realize that sponsoring groups have to provide a huge VIP allotment… but sometimes, last year, our culturally unconnected group gasped in dismay when we saw the Veep seats forlorn and empty.

But that’s life in the cultural arena!

  1. Totally agreed. Many people get free tickets as soon as they’re made available but don’t even turn up because they’re just interested in freebies and don’t care about what’s on.
