Day trip to Phat Diem Cathedral
Sat 20 Mar, 7:30 am – 6:30 pm
Meeting Place: Hanoi Daewoo Hotel
360 Kim Ma Street, Ba Dinh
As part of FVH’s March cultural programme, travel with us and Professor Le Van Lan, famous historian, to see Phat Diem which is located 121 km south of Hanoi and 29 km southeast of Ninh Binh. We are making plans to meet the Bishop who will show us the museum. Phat Diem cathedral is well know and was built between 1875 and 1899 in Kim Son village by a Vietnamese priest named Father Sau Luc. The site consists of a network of ponds, lakes, churches and artificial caves. The cathedral is famous for its extraordinary architecture, a sort of Franco-Sino-Vietnamese pagoda: sloping tile roofs with up-curving dragons at the corners, wooden colonnades and carved stone reliefs.
Climb the bell tower and enjoy the view of the cathedral church, its annex buildings and the surrounding area dotted with many more churches.
We will also visit a family whose members are noted for their artistic work with rush mats and baskets. There will be items to purchase.
Please bring your own pack lunch and snacks and we will sit in the front courtyard around the reflecting pool, enjoying the quietness of village life. We will provide bottled water.
Limit: 35 participants
Cost: 300,000 VND
