Earth Day is widely celebrated around the world. It is the day when we take the time to appreciate the Earth and all of its wonderful resources. It’s the time to think about how to be caretakers of the planet, and take a considerate and responsible approach for preservation and conversation. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the International Earth Day, a special event to commemorate the Earth Day will take place in Hanoi, including the projection of documentaries, samples of organic food, dance performance by Apsara Dance Studio, and a live concert by Hanoi Bossa Band.
This event also offers a chance for people to learn about how to make our city greener. Additionally information about local and international NGO’s working on environmental issues, community and sustainable development and fair trade among others will be available.
As part of the event, we will screen “Organic Life”, a documentary by Ha Thi Lan Anh, which presents the lives and hard work of a small group of farmers living on the outskirts of Hanoi. In the face of rapid social change and pressures to make quick money through dishonest marketing, the farmers in Thanh Xuan Organics have gone back to their roots. From June 2008-June 2009, the farmers joined an organic vegetable project implemented by a Vietnamese NGO, Action for the City, and funded by AusAID. The most poignant sections of this documentary let the farmers—primarily women—speak for themselves about their commitment to organic farming and their concerns about marketing and sustainability. In contrast to the farmers’ raw honesty, some urban Hanoi consumers speak cynically in the film about the potential for truly safe, clean food. But by the end, even the most reluctant viewer will be won over by “Organic Life.”
