The Bui Gallery cordially invites you to the opening of “Momentum of the River’s Flow: An Australian’s View of Vietnam’s Long Journey.”
Les Horvat spent over twenty years working as an award-winning photographer in a career at the leading edge of commercial, advertising photography in Australia. He is the founder of his own multi-studio complex, Twilight Zone Studios, which operated for eight years as a significant creative centre for commercial photographic illustration in Melbourne.
For Momentum of the River’s Flow, Les Horvat proposes thirty-four photographs depicting the length and breadth of Vietnam’s cultural, historical and literal landscape. As a foreigner, Horvat attends to the details of particular sites that the locals might ignore in their everyday pursuits and he brings with him a strong sense of global history to attach to the local details. Horvat sees Vietnam as ever changing and forward marching, which is why his multi-angled consideration of historical sites is so central to this series.
The reinterpretation and construction of a narrative through careful post-production editing acts as another agent in Momentum of the River’s Flow. Color, tone, texture and definition tell their own story, adding to the overall meaning of each photograph and by extension the whole series. This is another way that Horvat inserts himself, and An Australian’s View, into the larger picture.
